About Trondheim

Nidaros Cathedral, the wooden wharves and lanes of Bakklandet by the Old Town Bridge, and a summer boat to the island fortress of Munkholmen.

Trondheim grew up as Nidaros, one of the early kings' main seats, and became the home of Norway's archbishop in the 1150s. After almost the whole town burned in 1681, the centre was laid out again with wide, straight streets and solid defences. West of town, the Bymarka forest starts where the tram line ends.

Most road trips through central Norway pass here, so give it a day or two: walk the centre, ride the tram up to the forest, or follow Ladestien along the fjord.

Good to know

  • Getting there: The E6 from Oslo and the north meets the E39 coast road here. About 7 h 30 from Oslo; Værnes airport is about 35 minutes away.
  • Season: The Munkholmen boats run in summer only, and the Kristiansten museum opens in summer; Bymarka has ski trails in winter.
  • Sleeping: Small independent places in the centre, such as Pensjonat Jarlen and Nidaros Pilegrimsgård, and Flakk Camping by the fjord (May–August).
  • Food: Homemade Norwegian food and cakes at Baklandet Skydsstation, a small old wooden house by the Old Town Bridge.
