About Verdal

Stiklestad, where St Olav fell in 1030, stages its open-air St Olav Drama at Olsok each July, and St Olav's Way crosses the valley.

Verdal is a valley shaped like a triangle, from a short strip on the inner Trondheimsfjord to a 50 km border with Sweden. The clay lowland around Verdalsøra is some of Trøndelag's best farmland, and the same clay gave way in the great landslide of 1893. Higher up, forest gives way to the bare tops of Skjækerfjella.

It works as a day off the E6, or as the way to Sweden on Fv72, with a stop at the border blockhouse from 1909–11 in Inndalen.

Good to know

  • Getting there: The E6 runs through Verdalsøra and Fv72 climbs Inndalen to Sweden. About 1 h 30 from Trondheim and 1 hour from Værnes airport.
  • Season: The Inndalen blockhouse trail is a May–September outing, and Karl Johans veg over Skalstufjellet is best walked in summer and autumn.
  • Sleeping: Three campsites: Stiklestad Camping, Soria Moria Camping near Verdalsøra, and Østnes Camping (May–September).
  • Food: Fæby farm brewery sells its own beer, cured meats and frozen farm pizza by arrangement.
