About Røros

Røros's UNESCO-listed wooden mining town, guided tours deep in the Olavsgruva mine, and the Rørosmartnan winter market every February.

Røros is high plateau country: all of it lies above 615 m, with bare ridges towards Sweden and big lakes such as Aursunden. Outside the town, farms follow the Glåma valley, and slag heaps and mine ruins show how copper shaped the land.

Give it a night or two: walk among the old mines north of town, then drive south-east to Femunden, where a lake boat has sailed since 1905. Winters are cold, so pack for it.

Good to know

  • Getting there: Fv30 from Tynset and Støren, a road east into Sweden and Fv705 north to Tydal. About 55 minutes from Tynset and 2 h 45 from Trondheim.
  • Season: MS Fæmund II sails from Synnervika from mid-June to late summer; the Doktortjønna lake park is staffed from about 24 June to early August.
  • Sleeping: Bergstadens Hotel in the old town, Røros Camping (open all year) and Vauldalen Gård camping near the Swedish border.
  • Food: Trygstad Bakeri in Kjerkgata, open since 1906, and Galåvolden Gård, a farm shop selling Røros cheese and farm ice cream.
