About Inderøy
The Golden Road (Den Gyldne Omvei) trail of farm shops and cafés, the Nils Aas Art Workshop gallery and sculpture park, and the old wooden village of Straumen.
Inderøy is farmland at the inner end of the Trondheimsfjord: a low peninsula of old seabed between two fjords, with a narrow tidal sound at its southern end and the wooded, rockier Mosvik peninsula across a long bridge to the west. Settlement here is old and spread evenly along the fjord.
It is an easy afternoon off the E6 near Steinkjer, or a slow way over the bridge to Fosen. Stay a night to walk out to Høsholmen at low tide and see the 1100s stone church at Sakshaug.
Good to know
- Getting there: Fv755 leaves the E6 at Røra and crosses the Skarnsund bridge to Fosen. About 25 min from Steinkjer, 1 h 45 from Trondheim.
- Season: Sakshaug old church opens in summer and the Rostad estate has an exhibition in July; check the tide table before walking to Høsholmen.
- Sleeping: Small farm and fjord hotels such as Øyna Kulturlandskapshotell and Husfrua Gårdshotell, and campsites including Koa Camping (March–August).
- Food: Inderøysodd, the Trøndelag meat soup, made since 1938 at Inderøy Slakteri, and prize-winning blue cheese from Gangstad Gårdsysteri.
