About Frosta
Cross the 2.4 km causeway to Tautra for medieval abbey ruins, birdlife and the Cistercian nuns' shop, then stand at Tinghaugen, where the Frostating assembly met.
Frosta is a low peninsula between the main Trondheimsfjord and Åsenfjorden, most of it under 150 metres and given over to farming. The soil is fertile and spring comes early, so its vegetables and berries reach the market early in the year. Wooded hills rise to the north-east, and Stone Age boats and whales are cut into the rock at Evenhus.
It makes a half-day loop off the E6 at Åsen, or a night at a fjord-side campsite with walks on the Frostastien shore trail.
Good to know
- Getting there: Fv753 links Frosta to the E6 at Åsen. The centre is about 1 h 15 from Trondheim and 45 minutes from Stjørdal and Værnes.
- Season: Logtun Church beside the assembly mound is open daily from 1 May to 15 September; Tautra's birdlife is best in the spring and autumn migration.
- Sleeping: Campsites along the shore, among them Korsnes Camping (1 March–1 November), Åsholmen Camping (April–September) and Frosta Fjordbuer.
- Food: Klostergården Tautra brews its own beer and runs a farm shop; the Valberg farm shop is open day and night.
