About Tydal
Hike the Sylan massif from the DNT huts at Nedalshytta and Storerikvollen, where a marked trail follows part of the 1719 Carolean death march, in which about 3,000 Swedish soldiers froze.
Tydal is the upper Nea valley on the Swedish border, a mountain parish where almost nine-tenths of the land lies above 600 metres. The farms and the centre at Ås sit low in the main valley, while the dams of the big Nesjøen reservoir lie higher up.
It suits walkers and anglers with a few days, and makes a quiet way between Selbu and Røros, with cabins and campsites round Stugudalen near the pass.
Good to know
- Getting there: Fv705 runs from Selbu over the mountains to Brekken near Røros. Ås is about 2 hours from Trondheim and 1 h 30 from Røros.
- Season: The Langsvola pass towards Brekken can close or run in convoy in winter storms; Riastvegen and the toll road to Storerikvollen are summer only.
- Sleeping: Moheim Camping (open all year) and Stugudal Camping in Stugudalen, and Gresslifoss Fiskecamp (May–September) in Græsli.
- Food: The café at 705 Senteret in Ås, which doubles as a gallery and national-park information point; check hours first.
