About Namsskogan

Bears, wolves and lynx at Park Nordica (the former Namsskogan Familiepark) by the E6 at Trones, salmon in the upper Namsen, and the Smalåsen road into Børgefjell National Park.

Namsskogan is a long river valley at the top of Namdalen: a gentle floor of bog and sandy moor, with forest and mountain ridges of 700–1,100 m on both sides, and a third of the land above the tree line. The main road and the railway follow the river, and the old mining village of Skorovatn lies up a side road.

Most people drive straight through on the way north. Stay a night to fish the rivers, or walk or bike the 1912 road over Steinfjellet towards Røyrvik.

Good to know

  • Getting there: The E6 and the railway follow the Namsen; Fv773 goes to Røyrvik. About 1 h 15 from Grong and 3 hours from Mo i Rana.
  • Season: The road to the Smalvatnet gateway into Børgefjell is not ploughed in winter; Park Nordica at Trones is open daily in summer.
  • Sleeping: Brekkvasselv Camping, Nyheim Camping and Trones Hotell & Camping; the last two are open all year.
  • Food: The restaurant at Park Nordica serves regional, seasonal food, and passing drivers can eat there without a park ticket.
