About Meråker

The last valley on the E14 before Sweden, with salmon fishing on the Stjørdalselva and trails into Skarvan and Roltdalen National Park.

Meråker is the upper end of Stjørdalen, where several rivers meet in an open valley; about 60 per cent of the land lies above the tree line. Copper and pyrite were mined here in the past, and Kopperå keeps its old industrial village of workers' houses, a stone chapel and a station on the line to Sweden.

Most people drive straight through. Stop for an hour at Kopperå, or give it a night near the border at Teveldalen for pilgrim paths and old mine trails.

Good to know

  • Getting there: The E14 follows the railway to Storlien. Midtbygda is about 1 h 30 from Trondheim, 55 minutes from Værnes and 25 from the border.
  • Season: Meråker Alpinsenter runs roughly December–April; the pilgrim crosses at Skurdalsporten are reached when the pass is free of snow, June–September.
  • Sleeping: Teveltunet Fjellstue by the border (open all year), Turifoss Camping (April–October) and Meråker Kro og Camping.
  • Food: Sissels Spiseri on the E14 in the centre, with lunch dishes, pizza and homemade cakes.
