About Frøya
Take the boat out to Sula's fishing village and lighthouse on the outer skerries, and visit Titran, where an 1899 storm took some 140 fishermen.
Frøya lies out in the sea west of the mouth of the Trondheimsfjord: low, bare rock with small lakes in the hollows, almost all of it under 60 metres. Thousands of islets and skerries spread north towards Froan, with fishing villages such as Mausund on the outer islands and Sistranda as the centre.
The road ends here, so it suits a day from Hitra or a night or two for sea fishing and boat trips out to the islands.
Good to know
- Getting there: Fv714 from Orkanger crosses Hitra and tunnels under the sea to Frøya. Sistranda is about 1 h 45 from Orkanger, 2 h 30 from Trondheim.
- Season: Landing in Froan is banned from 1 April to 10 August except on a few islands; Halten lighthouse has guided visits in summer.
- Sleeping: Hotell Frøya in Sistranda, Sula Rorbuer & Havhotell out on Sula, and a motorhome park at Titran.
- Food: Søvæst, the sky bar on top of Hotell Frøya in Sistranda, looks out over the islets; check opening hours before you go.
