About Flatanger

Hanshelleren cave, where Adam Ondra climbed Silence, the world's first 9c route, plus sea fishing and rorbu stays among Flatanger's skerries.

Flatanger is the outer edge of the Namdal coast: a steep mainland of 400–600 m hills cut by short, winding fjords, with more than a thousand islands and islets out towards the open sea and plenty of seabirds among them. Lauvsnes is the only village of any size.

The road ends at the sea, so give it a night or two. Walk the wartime tunnels at Utvorda, climb Alettaklumpen above the village or spend a day on the beaches of the outer coast.

Good to know

  • Getting there: Fv766 leaves Fv17 at Sjøåsen and runs out to the coast. Lauvsnes is about 1 h 15 from Namsos and 1 h 30 from Steinkjer.
  • Season: Climbers come in late summer and autumn; on Villa-dagen in July a boat goes out to the 1839 Villa lighthouse.
  • Sleeping: Four campsites, among them Utvorda Camping (late April–mid October), Holmen Kystcamping and Hasvåg Sjøcamping.
  • Food: The volunteer centre in Lauvsnes runs a small café on weekdays from 10 to 14.
